BOL presents new raw materials at show.

During the trade fair HortiContact in Gorinchem, we proudly presented two innovative raw materials for use in substrates for professional horticulture: Acrotelm and Bagasse.

With these sustainable alternatives, we respond to the growing demand for future-proof substrate solutions.

What is Acrotelm?

Acrotelm is a natural material with a low pH and EC. It has a buffering capacity comparable to young peat, but it is not peat.

Acrotelm is the upper, living and actively growing layer of a peat bog. It consists of sphagnum moss and other typical peatland plants. Because this layer can regenerate to a harvestable thickness within approximately 25 years, acrotelm represents a renewable and, in principle, inexhaustible source of raw materials for substrate blends.

Currently, acrotelm is available from Finland, where suitable raised bog areas are present. In principle, harvesting is possible in all regions where raised bogs are formed.

What is Bagasse?

Bagasse is a fibrous byproduct of sugarcane that remains after the stalks have been crushed.

It is often burned as biomass, but it also has numerous other applications, including biofuel, bioplastics, paper and packaging, construction materials, animal feed, and compost and soil improvement.

Sugarcane is the world’s largest crop by mass and is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Antarctica and Europe are the only continents where sugarcane is not produced.
