100% peat-free substrate with 100% renewable raw materials

Owner Ronald Bruinen of Westkaab increased the share of renewable raw materials in his growing media mixtures to 40% last year. Now, trials are going on with substrates made entirely from renewable materials, making them 100% peat-free.

"A number of British customers will no longer allow peat starting next year, so it's do or die," the grower explains.
Ronald is very satisfied with the first transition phase completed last year and is confident about the ongoing trials.

Great internship project:
Eric Forschelen is overseeing the trials on our behalf. During cultivation, various parameters are measured using sensors, with data being collected and evaluated. Horticulture student Tim Buitelaar has been brought on board for the practical execution. For him, it’s an enjoyable and educational internship assignment. At the end of June, the switch will be fully made, enabling Westkaab to supply green plants in peat-free substrate starting January 1, 2026.
